History of the British Amateur Boxing Association

Representatives of the English Institute and Scottish Amateur Boxing Association met on the 13th September 1947 at the George Hotel, Edinburgh (Scotland).  Those present were:

Mr G.R. Johnstone chaired the meeting and a Mr. H.C. Brundle was a 'Clerk to the Council'.  Initially the British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) was to be called 'Inter-nation Committee.  However Scotland objected and suggested the name of British Amateur Boxing Committee ( 'BABC').  Much debate took place around affiliations to Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA).  At the time the ABAE was affiliated to AIBA as a 'Great Britain'.  Wales did not attend.

The BABA got off to a slow start.  Delegates from Scotland had 'executive powers' whilst the English delegates did not.  However its fundamental role was the selection of the 'Olympic Boxing team' to represent Great Britain from the Home Nations of; England, Scotland and Wales.  It was to meet annually.  Its original 'Terms of Reference' were agreed as:

13th January 1948

 

Northern Irelandathletes considered eligible for Olympic Section at the 1948 London Games.

 

6th May 1948

 

National Coal Board ABA was affiliated to the ABA of England.

 

19th January 1949

 

Railway Executive ABA affiliated to the ABA of England.

 

Territorial Army would be classed as civilians but the Army BA would over see their Championships.

 

24th January 1950

 

Scottish ABA launches its 'District Youth Championships (aged 14 / 15).  At the time Scotland had no 'Schoolboy Championships'.

 

Scottish ABA ban the wearing of contact lenses.

 

Athletes involved in the 1950 British Empire Games could enter the ABA Championships later if they were the 1949 ABA Champions.

 

To consider the formation, rules and articles of a 'British Empire Boxing Federation' (B.E.B.F).  This item was deferred.

 

20th April 1950

 

Scotland  proposed 'bandages' should be worn.  England disagreed!!!

 

Scotland  proposed an 'audible count'.  England disagreed!!!

 

South Africa  and Australia support the idea of the BEBF.  It was however never formed.

 

26th January 1956

 

Scottish ABA raise concerns over medical professionals stating amateur boxing was 'brutal' and should be banned.

 

26th April 1956

 

Appeal fund established to support the Amateur Boxers at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.  The BABA won (2) Gold Medals:

 

51kg Terry Spinks (England)

57kg Dick McTaggart (Scotland).

 

Comment made that its clear that Government funding is 'new' but it isn't always as effective in delivering results!!!

 

25th April 1957

 

Idea put forward of a 'Four Nations' Tournament including Ireland.

 

19th November 1957

 

Membership of the Olympic Selection Committee for the (1960) agreed as:

 

England  (6)

Scotland(3)

Wales     (3).

 

Idea of a 'medical after each bout' at all international matches was discussed.

 

24th April 1958

 

Membership of the 1960 Olympic Games Selection Committee altered to:

 

England                  (4)

Scotland                 (4) 

Wales                     (4)

Imperial Services (1)

 

7th January 1959

 

Agreed ABA Champion would be the 1960 Olympic Team!

 

Scotlandquestioned the televising of boxing on a Saturday afternoon which in their view was detrimental to football.

 

23rd April 1958

 

Rules of AIBA not adopted by the BABA.

 

Consideration be given to a BABA wide medical card scheme.

 

27th January 1960

 

Chairman to be elected annually.

 

Concern over clashes on Television of amateur boxing in Scotland and Wales.  Need for better co-ordination of dates.

 

Olympic Selection Committee to be formed!!!

 

30th April 1960

 

Olympic Team (1960 Rome) finally selected along with Officials.

 

Lilleshall (CCPR) to be used if available as National Centre.

 

27th April 1961

 

Doctor should be available at all times throughout a contest and tournament.

 

Cost of 1960 Rome Olympic boxing expenses £1057.10s.8d.

 

31st January 1962

 

Great Britainteams to be a 'BABA' role.

 

Adoption of Lt. Col. R.H. Russell as President of AIBA at the 1962 AIBA Congress.

 

Four Nations Tournament agreed.

 

12th July 1964

 

Olympic Selection for 1964 Tokyo Games.  R. McTaggart (Scotland) 'added as a 7th boxer' if possible.

 

R. McTaggart eventually went to the 1964 Tokyo Games.  His third Olympics (1956, 1960, 1964).

 

29th April 1965

 

The British Amateur Boxing Committee becomes the British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA).

 

BABA primacy over Home Nations was not agreed.

 

Deaf boxers would not be allowed to box.

 

11th May 1968

 

1968 Mexico Games Olympic team and Officials selected.  Along with reserves.

 

25th June 1969

 

Consideration of whether to support the establishment of the European Amateur Boxing Association (EABA).

 

27th July 1968

 

T. Waller (England) moved from 'Reserve Boxer' at 64kg at expense of C. Booth.

 

20th May 1972

 

Selection of the 1972 Olympic Squad (and Reserves) and Officials made for Munich.  BOA donated £1,000.

 

12th July 1972

 

Munich Olympic Team selection made.

 

13th April 1973

 

BABA representation agreed as:

 

England  (4)

Scotland(2)

Wales    (2)

 

16th April 1974

 

British Amateur Boxing Association becomes an independent Association.

 

1st May 1975

 

Discussed possibility of an European Economic Community (EEC) Championship.  Declined.

 

29th April 1976

 

Great Britainv USA televised by BBC for a fee of £4,000.  Plus sponsored by Abbey Life Assurance Company of £5,000.

 

17th June 1976

 

1976 Olympic Team and Officials for Montreal Games selected.
